Eat and Drink: Hollandberry Pannekoeken

Hollandberry Pannekoeken

In case you don’t know what a Pannekoeken is, it’s a traditional Dutch oven pancake. If you haven’t yet had one, then you’re missing out. Hollandberry isn’t new. In fact, it’s one of Rochester’s legacy restaurants. It’s been serving delicious Pannekoeken since the late 1980s. Though they have been through three different locations during this time, Tasos Psomas, the restaurant’s owner, hopes to stay at this location for a while.

As one of Rochester’s favorite brunch spots, the signature breakfasts are mostly the same as before, but lunch and dinner have a new twist. The food is just how it’s always been: fresh, fast, friendly, and fun.

Pannekoeken provides a welcome alternative to traditional pancakes. The classic style is served with lemon wedges and powdered sugar. They also serve a variety of different kinds such as banana with house made rum sauce, apple and raisin, original apple, blueberry, and apple pecan. The rum sauce is magical and if they sold it to-go, it’d pair greatly with anything and everything. The pannekeokens are served with syrup, but they’re seriously so good that you don’t even need it. Be ready for them to “announce” your pannekoeken, and if you don’t know what that means, you’ll just have to go order one yourself to find out.

Some places may do savory options particularly well, while others do sweet options well. But Hollandberry’s happens to do both. Other options include omelets, and cheese lovers will rejoice that Gouda is an option. The eggs Florentine is served with a perfectly paired hollandaise sauce and breakfast potatoes which are nice and crunchy. Their sweet options are equally as tasty, including scintillating blueberry banana waffles and truly fluffy buttermilk pancakes. The hash browns are creamy on the inside and beautifully browned on the outside. The coffee is served hot and fresh, top notch quality and they’ve also got amazing frappes. Or if you’re not a coffee person, their orange juice is just as fresh.

On top of all of that, they are also well known for their muffins. They have great specials, like buy five muffins, get one free or free delivery when you buy 12 or more. Although they’re baked fresh daily, it’s not uncommon to still be able to find a great variety later in the day, so don’t let that stop you. They serve 20 different magnificent muffins, as well as some seasonal selections. These are arguably the biggest and best muffins around.

Lunch selections include things like a tasty BLT, which is served with muenster cheese curds. Like everything else, it tastes great, and you can tell they use fresh ingredients. The flavor is fantastic, and you can tell they take the extra time, care, and attention to detail on serving great food.

For dinner, the Dutch pot pie is to die for. It’s uniquely lighter than most pot pies. It puts you in that conundrum where you want to try other things on the menu, but you also really crave and want that awesome thing you’ve already had.

On top of all of that, the new location is beautiful, clean, and the service is great. Hollandberry’s proximity to the Mayo Clinic make it a great nearby option if you’re looking to find something to eat while there. But it’s also worth the drive if you’re just in the Rochester area in general.
